Bioinformatics boosters. Summer research program exposes community college students to emerging field

For aspiring computer engineer Anthony Hizon, spending the summer in a biological chemistry lab at UC Irvine’s School of Medicine was quite an eye-opener.

“Talking to the Ph.D. students in the lab gave me new ideas about my future,” says Hizon, one of seven participants in the newly launched UCI Biomedical Informatics Training Undergraduate Summer Research Program for community college students. “I’ve learned that bioinformatics is a viable career option for me, and I’m now thinking about going to graduate school.” Read more here.
