Overview

The UCI interdisciplinary, Biomedical Informatics Training (BIT) Program for the training of postdoctoral fellows in the computational and life sciences is coordinated with faculty and research programns in the Schools of Information and Computer Sciences, Biological Sciences/Medicine, Physical Sciences, and Engineering.

Postdoctoral Fellows in the BIT Program are provided the same training standards as the graduate students. They are encouraged to take immersion courses in the discipline complementary to their original background, as needed.

Nomination process

Recruitment criteria and procedures are similar to those for graduate students. Applications are evaluated by the BIT Steering Committee. Admission into the program is based on the quality of letters of recommendation and past research accomplishments. While formally the postdoctoral trainees do not need a second mentor, it is expected that research projects will result in collaborations and publications that will include both life- and computational scientists.

Requirements

Responsible Conduct of Research. All NIH-funded postdoctoral fellows are required to take a course on this topic.

The Tuesday Biomedical Informatics Forum - BC204. Members of the BIT Program are encouraged to enroll in BC204 and participate in this forum each quarter their academic schedules permit. The forum involves faculty and personnel of over a dozen research laboratories in ICS/BIO/SOM/PS. Topics discussed include discovery of patterns in genomic sequence, computational and statistical approaches to interpretation of array data, and computational approaches to protein folding, and genome annotation. These discussions have resulted in multiple research collaborations and publications (www.genomics.uci.edu/publications/pubs.html).

Seminars. In addition to seminars presented in their home departments, the students in the training program are required to attend seminars sponsored by the UCI Institute of Genomics and Informatics. These seminars most often emphasize computational aspects of bioinformatics (see Appendix Item 2, Campus Seminar Programs).

Annual Trainee Mini-Symposium. Each year in the spring, The Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics sponsors a half-day symposium for the trainees to present their research results.

Attendance and Participation in National Meetings. All are encouraged to attend national meetings to broaden their perspectives of current topics and methods in bioinformatics research. Support for those presenting their research results at the meeting will be given top priority.
