IGB is pleased to present 9 academic Distinguished Speakers renowned for their contributions to biology, information technology, and society. All presentations will be held at the McDonnell Douglas Auditorium on the campus of the University of California, Irvine, at 4 pm, unless otherwise noted. The 2003-2004 Series is highlighted by two Biotechnologies in Society presentations, cosponsored by the Newkirk Center for Science and Society. Drs. Moreno and Peters will speak to general audiences on critical issues of our day.

On December 10, Jonathan Moreno, Ph.D., of University of Virginia Health Sciences will speak on current hot debates in human experiments that concern researchers and the public alike. Dr. Moreno has served on two presidential commissions, been Senior Consultant to the National Bioethics Advisory and has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives. He is the author of several books on biomedical ethics, including the Undue Risk: Secret State Experiments on Humans. Moreno is a commentator and columnist for ABCNews.com and a frequent guest on national news programs.

Clarence J. Peters, M.D., will address today's headlines on viral threats to public health on April 23, 2004. Dr. Peters, Director of the Center for Biodefense and Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch, is author of the popular book Viral Hunter. The former Chief of Special Pathogens at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta has worked in the field of infectious diseases for decades with the CDC, U.S. Army, and the U.S. Public Health Service. He has been a key player in Ebola and deadly hemorrhagic fever outbreaks in both the U.S. and abroad.
