The Institute
hosts a wide variety of outreach activities for faculty, students,
and the public. An annual Distinguished
Speaker Series brings leading academics from a wide variety
of disciplines to UCI. This past academic year IGB was pleased to host Eric
Lander, M.I.T. Professor of Biology and Director of both the
Whitehead Center for Genome Research and the Broad Institute. Dr.
Lander's visit was generously supported by the UCI 04-05 Chancellor's
Distinguished Fellow Series, for which he gave a separate
general-audience presentation (see
http://www.chancellor.uci.edu/cdfs/). The 2005-2006
Distinguished Speaker Series schedule is now posted.
IGB also hosts, co-hosts, and
sponsors regional and international Conferences
emphasizing one of its seven Program Areas. On September 17, 2004,
the Chemical Biology Symposium, hosted by James Nowick, UCI Professor of Chemistry and IGB
Chemical Biology Program Leader, welcomed a record group of
interdisciplinary academic and industry participants. In
2006, the IGB Systems Biology Symposium "Frontiers in
Systems Biology" will be hosted by Eric Mjolsness, UCI Assoc.
Professor of Computer Science and IGB Systems
Biology Program Leader, in cooperation with Arthur Lander, UCI
Professor and Chair Developmental and Cell Biology and Director of
the Center for Complex Biological Systems.
Periodically, IGB
hosts visiting scientists from industry, academia and government.
As with other IGB events, these Seminars
are advertised through our website and email.
To have your name added to our email list, which is used almost exclusively for IGB event notification, please send an email to igb@ics.uci.edu.
